MY ROLE
Product Designer
COMPANY
Resideo
Before
Context
In 2018, Honeywell spun off its home division to create Resideo, inheriting 50+ offices and over 100 fragmented smart home products spread across water, energy, air, and security.
27+ legacy apps across acquisitions and verticals
Pro and consumer systems couldn’t communicate
Thermostats, security, and energy tools operated in silos
Outdated firmware, technician-locked devices, and ecosystem gaps led to customer frustration

What I Did
The Work
I joined the new consumer product team to design a unified app in just 3 months, consolidating 27+ legacy apps and integrating new acquisitions. My core contributions:
System Architecture: Designed a layered dashboard model for whole-home visibility
Widget Framework: Created modular controls for cross-device functionality
Notification System: Defined 5-tier alert model for nuanced, action-oriented messaging (especially for security events)
Water & Energy Systems: Led design of adaptive scheduling, cloud-enabled control, and gamified model training (e.g., swipe-to-teach water usage categorization)
Cross-System Integration: Proposed behavior-based automations (e.g., turning off water if pipes might burst & security confirms no one is home)

Results & Outcomes
Full specification delivered in 12 weeks. Twenty-seven legacy apps consolidated into a single consumer mobile platform, on time. The project was cancelled due to COVID before development began. The work product was the spec: a complete, documented unified experience that gave Resideo a clear picture of what its home platform could be.
